Why does the coating tend to peel when using electrolytic degreasing powder?

Why do workpieces tend to peel during electroplating after degreasing? Is this related to the electrolytic degreasing powder? Not necessarily. In this article, we'll analyze the issue using a case study.

A plating plant was experiencing peeling of the plating layer on its workpieces. After extensive troubleshooting failed to resolve the issue, an investigation by Bigely, a manufacturer of electrolytic degreasing powder, revealed that the problem was caused by impurities on the surface of the degreasing solution. During the electrolytic degreasing reaction, the breakdown of oil contaminants produces substances such as soap, glycerin, and stearate esters. These substances, along with free oil contaminants that have not yet reacted with the alkaline solution, float on the surface of the solution. When workpieces enter and exit the solution, these substances adhere to their surfaces. This factor is a major cause of the peeling in the plating layers.  

To remove this layer of floating matter, Engineer suggests using a net to scoop it out, or using thick paper to press against the liquid surface and absorb it.

So, how can we prevent such phenomena from recurring again?

When the electroplating factory places the workpieces into the degreasing tank, it can first shake them a few times in the alkaline solution. This is to remove the dirt that adheres to the surface of the workpiece when it enters the tank. When the workpieces are taken out of the tank, they should also be shaken in the alkaline solution for a few times. And quickly remove them when the dirt on the surface spreads in all directions.
