When using tin plating brighteners, what problems can arise if the purity of the prepared materials is poor?

During the application of tin plating brightener, many factors can lead to poor brightness of the coating and rough crystallization. However, the main factor is related to the purity of the prepared materials. For example, an electroplating factory that used industrial-grade raw materials and tap water to prepare the solution failed to produce any qualified products. Now, let's analyze this issue.

① Purity requirement of sodium bisulfate

Sulfosalicylic acid is the main salt. The purity of the newly prepared solution of sulfosalicylic acid is of vital importance. It is best to use analytical pure reagents. How can we determine if the purity of sulfosalicylic acid is good? We can observe its appearance. If we see that its surface is yellowish, it cannot be used. This is because the divalent tin has been oxidized to tetravalent tin.

Tetra-silver is highly prone to hydrolysis and forms palladiumic acid. After the plating solution is prepared, it becomes cloudy. Over time, the coating appears dull and foggy. When observing the coating with a microscope, it can be noticed that the crystals are rough and loose.

② Requirement for the purity of sulfuric acid

When our customers use the Bigely tin plating brightener Sn-807 for production, our engineers suggest that the sulfuric acid should also be of analytical purity. This is because industrial-grade sulfuric acid contains various harmful impurities to the plating solution. Let me elaborate a bit more. For electronic products with RoHS requirements, the raw materials used must also comply with the relevant regulations of RoHS. We cannot let the accumulation of impurities in the raw materials ultimately affect the performance of the entire machine, including environmental safety performance.

③ Water quality purity requirements

The water quality requirements for electroplating tin production are also very high. Generally, deionized water or distilled water is required, and sometimes even high-purity water is needed. Why not use the cheaper tap water? Because tap water contains various impurities, which can affect the appearance and welding performance of the coating. Therefore, when the electroplating factory prepares the plating solution, our engineers suggest that deionized water must be used.
