When using copper pyrophosphate brighteners, how to identify the fault problems through the Hull Cell test?

2026-04-25 09:07:51

When using copper pyrophosphate brighteners, in order to determine the dosage of the brightening agent, the electroplating factory will choose to conduct a Hall cell test to make the judgment. Since the current density at the high and low ends of the Hall cell test differs by more than 50 times, sometimes faults can be detected earlier than the plated parts. Therefore, in this article, we will share with you how to promptly determine the cause of the fault and make adjustments when the Hall cell test piece fails.

The burned area is too wide

For the new 1A coating solution with stirring process, there should be no burning phenomenon at the high-end level. The flash coating solution allows for a burning area of 1 to 1.5 cm. During the flash coating process, it only takes 1 to 2 minutes. After aging, the coating solution may burn about 1 cm. If the burning area is too wide, possible reasons could be:

1.The concentration of the main salt is too low

K phosphate should be used to complex with copper phosphate, and then add more before retesting. In production, it is necessary to check whether the anode area is too small and whether there is any passivation phenomenon on the anode. If it is an aged plating solution, the cathode current density should be appropriately reduced.

2.P value is too high

As a manufacturer of copper pyrophosphate brighteners, Bigely believes that the P ratio should be appropriately reduced, which means increasing the amount of cuprous phosphate. If necessary, a trial can also be conducted by adding basic carbonate copper, but attention should be paid to its impact on the pH value.

3.Insufficient ammonia content

If the plating solution does not have a detectable ammonia smell, it is advisable to add a small amount of ammonia water. The reason why ammonia can increase the allowable JK value might be that NH3 and NH4+ can also replace H+ during cathodic discharge, thereby reducing the occurrence of burning phenomena. However, it is not recommended to add too much ammonia water; otherwise, it can also be harmful. When using the Broglie's brightening agent Cu-203, we suggest controlling the addition of ammonia water to be 2-4 milliliters per liter.
