During the application of continuous bright tin plating additives, how do organic and inorganic impurities in the plating bath affect the performance of the deposit? How can we control these impurities to avoid negative effects? In this article, we will address these questions.
① Iron and copper impurities in the plating bath can cause coating defects, such as a dull appearance and increased porosity. To address this, we can periodically treat the bath using low-current electrolysis.
② When organic impurities and decomposition products of tin plating additives accumulate in the plating bath, two issues arise: first, the viscosity of the bath increases; second, the deposit becomes rough and brittle, leading to pinholes. These can be removed using activated carbon. To do this, heat the plating bath to approximately 40°C, stir thoroughly, and filter once it has settled completely.
Some additives on the market tend to produce decomposition byproducts due to the use of inappropriate components. After use, electroplating plants are often forced to treat the plating bath frequently, which can easily delay production schedules. To solve this problem, Bigely Sn-839 continuous bright tin plating additive can be used. which produces minimal decomposition byproducts, extends the intervals between bath treatments, and ensures the stable operation of tin plating production.

③ When the concentration of anionic impurities such as chloride ions and nitrate ions in the plating bath exceeds 0.01 mol/L, defects such as darkening and pinholes are likely to occur in the plating layer, and the bath' s coverage capability decreases. Anionic impurities may originate from carryover in pretreatment solutions, inadequate cleaning of plating fixtures after stripping, or excessive impurities in raw materials. Once the plating bath is contaminated with anionic impurities, it is difficult to treat and restore; therefore, their introduction should be avoided as much as possible.
