At a certain electroplating plant, when using an alkaline copper plating additive, the resulting copper coating appeared dull and the deposition rate was slow, making normal production impossible. The plant conducted multiple investigations but could not identify the cause, which has caused them great concern.
As a manufacturer of alkaline copper plating additives, the engineers of Bigley were invited to the site to understand the situation. The actual situation was as follows: The three plating processes of copper, nickel, and chromium were all carried out in a room less than 50 square meters, and it had only one window on one side, resulting in poor ventilation. The pungent gas emitted by the chromium plating tank during operation filled the entire workshop. The engineers immediately believed that this malfunction was related to chromium fumes, and they suspected that the copper plating solution might have been contaminated by the chromium fumes. With the assistance of the engineers, the fault was dealt with, and production temporarily returned to normal.
In electroplating production, chromic acid is extremely harmful to any other plating methods. It is unreasonable to have chroming and other plating processes in the same workshop because the current density of chroming is high, the current efficiency is low, and the solution temperature is high. During chroming, hydrogen gas is released and combines with steam to form chromium fog, and this chromium fog contains a large amount of chromic acid.
In conditions with poor ventilation, chromium fumes would spread throughout the entire workshop. If they fell into other plating solutions, it would affect the quality of the coating. Later, following the suggestion of Engineer Bigley, the chromium plating tank was moved out of the workshop.
