What are the reasons for the natural decomposition of the electroless nickel plating solution?

In the previous article, we discussed that excessive concentration of hypophosphorous acid would cause the chemical nickel plating solution to undergo natural decomposition. Besides, factors such as nickel salt concentration, pH value adjuster content, etc. would also have an impact on the stability of the plating solution.

The influence of nickel salt concentration

If the concentration of nickel salts in the solution is too high and the pH value is also relatively high, it is likely to form nickel phosphite and nickel hydroxide precipitates, causing the solution to become cloudy and making it very prone to spontaneous decomposition.

The influence of pH adjustant content

Under the condition where other components of the plating solution remain unchanged, if the concentration of the pH adjuster is increased excessively, it is likely to cause the precipitation of nickel phosphite and nickel hydroxide; at the same time, it will also accelerate the decomposition of the reducing agent.

The allowable concentration of phosphoric acid is closely related to the pH value of the solution. As a chemical nickel plating solution manufacturer, the engineers at Bigely conducted research when developing chemical nickel plating products and found that the higher the pH value, the lower the allowable limit concentration of phosphoric acid. Therefore, during the plating process, we recommend controlling the pH value within the range of 4.9-5.1. In this way, the stability of the solution can be guaranteed.

The research results also show that when certain additive components are added to the acidic plating solution, they not only have a complexing effect on nickel ions, but also have the effect of increasing the upper limit of phosphoric acid concentration.
