The influence of the passivation time on the coating when using trivalent chromium zinc passivator

When using the trivalent chromium passivator for galvanizing, the workpiece is immersed in the passivation solution, and the galvanized layer continuously dissolves and forms a passivation film. Then, what influence does the length of passivation time of the workpiece have on the coating?

The longer the workpiece is immersed in the passivation solution, the thinner the galvanized layer will dissolve, and the thicker the passivation film will be. Generally, the speed at which trivalent chromium passivators form a passivation film is slower than that of hexavalent chromium, usually requiring 45 to 90 seconds. In this way, the equipment, cycle, etc. all need to adapt to this extended passivation time.

If the passivation time is too short, the thickness of the passivation film on the workpiece will be insufficient, and its corrosion resistance will be relatively poor. The passivation film on the workpiece begins to form when the workpiece is immersed in the passivation solution and stops forming when the workpiece enters the water washing tank. Unlike hexavalent chromium, the thickness of the trivalent chromium passivation film cannot be judged simply by observation. Therefore, during the production process, the operator should control the passivation time of the workpiece well.
