The chromium plating methods for different shaped parts

When using hard chrome additives, the plating requirements for different shaped parts are often different. Therefore, the corresponding plating methods also need to be adjusted. In this article, based on 23 years of technical service experience, we have compiled the chrome plating methods for different shaped parts. We hope this can help electroplating factories avoid unnecessary detours.

Parts with protrusions or depressions in certain areas

Some parts are partially protruding or recessed. For those that require thickening and chrome plating, they should still maintain sharp right angles. The chrome plating of these parts is quite challenging. When the protruding part of the part undergoes chrome plating, the electric current is concentrated in the protruding part, causing the current in other parts to be too small, resulting in a thin chrome coating.

At this point, the chromium coating obtained is difficult to maintain uniformity, and the chromium coating at the root is even thinner. Therefore, after each thickening of the chromium coating and subsequent grinding process, it is difficult to grind out the root part.

How should these recessed and protruding parts be plated? As a hard chrome additive manufacturer, Bigley suggests that electroplating factories can use auxiliary anodes or segmented plating (first plating the recessed and protruding parts, then the outer circle; or first plating the outer circle, then the recessed and protruding parts). This method can ensure that the chrome coating reaches a certain thickness uniformly.

The surface of the part has holes

During the application of hard chrome additives, sometimes there are small holes in the chrome-coated part of the parts. After thickening the chrome coating, the chromium layer around the holes is too thin, and sometimes there is no chromium coating at all. This is mainly because the area at the holes increases, resulting in a decrease in current density. At the same time, the electric current lines are difficult to be evenly distributed, thus making it difficult to deposit chromium.
