How should the process parameters be controlled when using continuous bright tin additive?

When an electroplating factory uses continuous bright tin plating additives, how can they control the process parameters properly to ensure the quality of the coating is up to standard? In this article, we will discuss the temperature and cathode current density.

Temperature

Increasing the temperature of the plating solution can expand the current density range; lowering the temperature of the plating solution will also lead to a decrease in current efficiency. When the temperature of the plating solution is too high, the additives in the solution are prone to decompose and lose their effectiveness, the antioxidant capacity of the solution decreases, and the divalent tin ions are easily oxidized into tetravalent tin ions, causing the plating solution to become cloudy. Therefore, when using the continuous bright tin plating additive Sn-839, it is recommended to control the temperature within the range of 18-25℃.

Cathode current density

Under normal circumstances, the cathode current density needs to be determined based on factors such as the concentration of tin ions in the plating solution and the temperature. Generally, when the temperature is high and the concentration of tin ions is high, a higher cathode current density can be adopted (the upper limit is 40A/dm2).

Under the condition that the temperature and the concentration of the plating solution remain unchanged, an increase in the cathode current density leads to enhanced cathode polarization, which is beneficial for the refinement of crystallization.

However, if the cathode current density is too high, hydrogen evolution from the plating solution and cracking of the coating are more likely to occur, which will result in rough, loose or porous coating crystals.
