When using the nickel plating brightener, if there is excessive copper impurity in the nickel tank, since the standard electrode potential of copper is higher than that of nickel, copper will first deposit on the cathode during electroplating and adhere to the surface of the product. This not only reduces the purity of the electroplated nickel but also lowers the current efficiency. Due to the low purity, the corrosion resistance of the coating will also decrease. If the mass concentration of copper impurities in the nickel plating solution is too high, the entire coating will turn black, rough, or even sponge-like, which will affect the quality of the product.
So, how can we avoid the contamination of copper impurities?
Firstly, it is advisable to coat the conductive copper rods and copper hooks with a layer of nickel to prevent copper scale from entering the plating solution and affecting the performance of the nickel coating. Currently, there are already products on the market that offer thin-layer titanium-coated copper rods. Although the resistance of titanium is higher than that of copper, since the titanium layer is very thin, the increase in resistance is not significant. Moreover, no copper scale is produced on the surface, thus preventing copper ions from falling into the plating solution.
Secondly, it is necessary to effectively manage the production in the workshop, conduct regular tests on the plating solution, and also attach great importance to the cleaning process. A certain electroplating factory in Cixi City once experienced such a failure: the lower area was severely discolored, and hydrogenated nickel precipitates appeared at the high area of the product edge. The factory conducted numerous investigations but found no solution.

As a manufacturer of nickel plating brighteners, the engineers from Bigely were invited to come and help solve the problem. After inspection, it was found that the copper content in the acid washing tank between the acidic brightening copper bath and the nickel plating bath had exceeded 50g/L per liter. The cleaning tank did not use flowing water and was blue in color, and the copper content was also seriously excessive.
Therefore, the factory added Bigely copper removing agent Ni-393 to the nickel tank, and was able to eliminate the copper impurities without having to suspend production.
