In the production process of using nickel plating additives, we sometimes find that the concentration of iron impurities in the plating solution is relatively high, resulting in poor brightness of the produced workpieces, which are prone to yellowing and whitening. However, after treating with hydrogen peroxide for a few days, this phenomenon reappeared. What is the reason for this?
When the iron impurities in the plating solution are high, iron hydroxides will precipitate and be mixed in the coating, which can easily make the coating brittle. Regarding the issue of high iron ion concentration in the plating solution, Bigely Technology has analyzed it based on on-site experience and product characteristics, mainly for the following three reasons:
1.The introduction of floating rust on the surface of the workpiece. Some factories' hot-rolled parts are not pickled as needed, but are soaked in clean water after pickling in the early stage, so there is already floating rust on the surface of the workpiece during electroplating. Although floating rust does not affect the adhesion of the workpiece, it will dissolve into iron ions in the plating solution as the drum rotates.
2.The workpiece fell into the plating tank through the door gap. Some production lines have rollers that have been in use for a long time, causing them to deform and not close tightly. When producing small workpieces in this way, they are prone to falling into the coating through the door gap.
3.Small workpieces or small discs during punching fall into the plating tank from the drum eye. Some small workpieces or small circular pieces during punching are smaller than the drum eye, and they are prone to fall into the plating tank from the drum eye when the drum rotates.
Iron ions are a common metal impurity and also a difficult impurity to handle. In the nickel plating production process, we should pay attention to these small details and regularly perform electrolytic treatment or hydrogen peroxide treatment on the plating solution to reduce the accumulation of iron ions in the plating solution, decrease the failure rate, and better use nickel plating additives.
